Withering Realms Early Bosses and Guardians
Spacing, secondary lunges, and day-versus-night choices for the first bosses and perimeter fights.
Withering Realms opens with two bosses in the Beynon House and Saintswood stretch, then asks you to beat perimeter guardians if you want the map to grow. This page is tactics, not a bestiary of later names. Steam Early Access opens on 2 September 2026 with seven large dungeons, bosses, puzzles, loot, and a bestiary of 110 monsters. Naming every later fight would be fiction. What you can learn on the first two bosses and on the ring around Penwyll will still apply when a new fog gate appears.
The game is single-player. It is not a roguelike. Some rooms shuffle on entry, but death does not wipe items, crafts, or story. A wipe is a spacing note. Read the combat guide if the four arms still feel like one button. Read the opening walkthrough if you do not know how you got to the fog. Ranked crafts live on the weapon ranking and the build planner.
How early bosses teach the doll
Clover pilots a two-metre doll with a missing right arm. That socket holds a crafted weapon with a primary and a secondary. Melee primaries are light combos. Secondaries are heavier strings that carry the doll forward. Early bosses punish the secondary you press because you were scared. They reward the secondary you press because you already owned the floor. Walk an arc. Stop. Let the tell finish. Then let the doll occupy the space the boss just left.
The doll’s left hand is utility: shields and pistols that buy the right arm a recovery. Clover’s left hand is flasks and grenades; save one flask for the second phase you have not seen. Her right hand is a spell catalyst that fires quickly and enhances the doll. Mash catalyst and you will enhance nothing useful. Tap it in the gap after a primary, then decide whether the secondary is still a good idea.
The first two bosses live in the opening hours. They are homework. If a scarecrow in Beynon House already taught you that scenery can stand up, a boss is the same lesson with a health bar. If the birdcage puzzle slowed you down, good: bosses also have a mechanism you can stare at. Do not skip the house and expect Saintswood to explain itself.
Perimeter guardians are map keys
The map expands when perimeter guardians fall. That is the sentence to remember. These fights are not loot piñatas. They are locks on roads, on the Clocktower approach, on the way toward Mazechapel gossip you are not ready to spend. Treat a guardian like a gate. If you cannot beat it, you do not get the next ring of Penwyll. That is intended.
Guardians like space. The 3/4 camera shows you the ring; use it. A Machinegun or Flamethrower wants a line you have already cleared of adds. Chain Rock wants the same line with more patience. Pivoting Greatsword wants a commit you can afford. Enchanted Candelabrum still has to hit. Tools are not customizable after you craft them, so do not scrap a right arm in the fog because the first attempt failed. Change the hour. Change the left-hand tool. Change whether you have a body talisman that actually protects, or a retrigger that never fires. About seventy talismans and fifty weapons and tools exist in Early Access; you need one loop you understand, not the whole list.
Night versus day is a real choice. Night is pitch black with physical lighting. Clover’s glow is visible after dark and washed out by day. Some guardians are easier when you can see the whole ring. Some optional bodies only exist after dusk, which means the same arena is crowded when you wanted it empty. The night cycle guide explains why a noon clear is not a night clear. If a guardian stuffed you at night, try dawn before you open the repair shop in a panic.
What not to import into a fog gate
Althea’s sections play like classic survival horror with fixed cameras. Interrogation, lockpicking, and forgery do not belong in a doll boss plan. If a fight suddenly sits still and the camera stops following the missing arm, you are not in a guardian fight. Put the secondary away. Her page is on the characters hub.
Do not dump every level into the right socket because a boss has a health bar. Body, left arm, and right arm level separately. A hollow body dies to a grab that ignores your DPS. A neglected left hand means you never raised a shield. Spend a little after an attempt, not a mountain before one. Replacement eyeballs as shop upgrades help if you keep walking into furniture; they will not aim the secondary for you.
Bug the fight if the fight bugs you. Press Slash (/) or use the pause menu, attach a screenshot, and say which crafts you held. Moonless Formless is a solo studio. Useful reports on the first two bosses help the seven dungeons that follow. Scope lives on the Early Access notes. Consoles and extra languages wait for 2027. The Steam build is English.
A boss is a conversation about space. The doll speaks with a secondary that walks, a catalyst that enhances, a flask you still have, and a left-hand tool you remembered to press. Perimeter guardians are how Penwyll decides whether you are allowed to see the next street. Beat them because you want the map, not because you want a parade of names this wiki refuses to invent. When the first two opening bosses feel fair, you are ready to walk the ring. When the ring feels fair, you are ready to spend parts on a second craft. Until then, practise the step, not the shopping list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for Penwyll, the doll, and Early Access.
Will this page name every boss?
No. It covers how to beat the first two opening bosses and perimeter guardians as a class. Later names are omitted on purpose so this guide cannot invent them.
How do I beat early bosses?
Spacing first. Use light primaries to poke, then a secondary melee only when the forward step is safe. Keep a flask. Enhance with the catalyst in recovery gaps. Details sit in the combat guide.
What are perimeter guardians for?
They expand the map when they fall. Treat them as road locks around Penwyll, not as loot piñatas. If you cannot win, you do not get the next ring yet.
Should I fight guardians at night or by day?
Both are valid and they are not the same arena. Night is pitch black with physical lighting. Try the other hour before you scrap a craft. See the night cycle guide.
Which weapons help?
Pivoting Greatsword, Chain Rock, Machinegun, Flamethrower, and Enchanted Candelabrum are the named right-arm examples. Compare them on the weapon ranking and lock a plan on the build page.
Do I lose progress if a boss kills me?
No. Withering Realms is single-player and not a roguelike. Death does not wipe items, crafts, or story. Spend a few levels after an attempt, not a mountain before one.
