Withering Realms The Doll

Two metres of wood, metal, and remains — with a socket where the right arm should be.

The Doll

The doll is the combat body. It stands about two metres tall. It is stitched and bolted from wood, metal, a human skull, organs taken from various bodies, and whatever else Penwyll’s mechanical genius can be paid to attach. Clover rides on its back. You are not building a second character. You are keeping a constructed frame alive enough for a ghost to steer.

The right arm is missing. That is the design, not a wound you heal with a potion. Weapons and machines craft into the socket: Pivoting Greatsword, Chain Rock, Machinegun, Flamethrower, Enchanted Candelabrum are the named examples. More than fifty weapons and tools exist in the campaign. This page will not invent the rest of the catalogue. Each craft has a set behaviour. You do not open a skill tree on a finished socket and retune the moveset. You spend resources, you commit, and you live with the job that tool does. The weapon ranking is where those five named jobs get letters. This page is why the socket is empty in the first place.

Construction, not a costume

Public descriptions are physical on purpose. Steel rods. Skull. Organs. The doll is supposed to look like a problem that walks. In town, that silhouette is a fact the streets have to tolerate. In a dungeon, it is your hitbox. Top-down combat cares about the volume of a two-metre body: how much space a secondary melee combo eats when it carries the frame forward, how much of a doorway a flamethrower cone fills, how much of a night street a candelabrum actually lights.

Replacement parts belong to the same idea. Public materials mention upgrades such as replacement eyeballs alongside arm tools and talismans. You are maintaining a machine. You are not unlocking a wardrobe. If a shop sells you a part, ask which of the three level tracks it serves before you buy it because it looks rarer than the last one.

The left arm is not missing. It is the utility side: shields, pistols, and other tools that are not the main socket show. A shield left and a greatsword right is a different doll from a pistol left and a machinegun right. People who only talk about the missing arm are describing half a body.

Three tracks — body, left arm, right arm

You level the body, the left arm, and the right arm separately. That split is the build system. Body is the frame: how much punishment it takes, how honestly it can occupy a floor while Clover works. Right arm is the socket you committed to. Left arm is the shield, the pistol, the utility you actually press. Dumping every point into the right arm because the trailer lingered on a flame is how you get a hungry tool on a body that folds in one grab.

The best builds page maps archetypes onto those tracks. Heavy melee wants body early so the pivoting blade can commit. Chain-and-crowd wants the right arm honest so the chain does not stall. Gun-and-flame wants right-arm economy before swagger. Catalyst-support wants body first because Clover cannot cast from the floor. None of those sentences work if you think “the doll” is a single XP bar.

Talismans sit on this skeleton. Limb charms boost damage or cut resource use. Four body talismans protect or retrigger arm charms when conditions are met. Seventy talismans is a lot of votes; four body slots is a small number on purpose. Read the talisman guide after you know which track you are actually feeding. A damage limb on an unlevelled right arm is a sticker, not a plan.

The repair shop is the other character

Penwyll has shops, a repair shop, the Clocktower, and the Mazechapel. The repair shop is where the missing arm becomes a menu. You bring cash and materials the doll found in fields, tombs, and estates. You leave with a socket, a part, or a charm. If you skip town and try to live in the seven dungeons, you will meet the empty socket again with nothing to put in it.

Map expansion is not a doll upgrade, but it is a doll exam. Perimeter guardians open the world. They are single-target problems wearing a travel sticker. A chain that made a packed tomb polite may not impress a guardian. A greatsword that felt slow in a crowd may be the only honest tool on that floor. Come back to the repair shop after a failed gate instead of grinding the same craft’s pride.

Night revisits are a maintenance problem as well as a horror one. New creatures in old streets punish a doll you built only for noon. Lighting tools, protection body talismans, and a left-arm shield you actually upgraded are how a constructed body walks after dark. The night cycle explains the routes. This page explains why the body has to be ready for them.

How the doll fights without stealing Clover’s page

Four arms act independently. Doll right: the socket. Doll left: utility. Clover right: catalyst. Clover left: consumables. The doll can be mid-swing while the ghost drinks or casts. That is the loop the combat guide exists to teach. The doll’s job inside that loop is to be the animation that occupies space. If the animation is a pivoting blade, occupy and finish. If it is a chain, occupy several bodies. If it is a gun or a flame, hold a line. If it is a candelabrum, make the room true.

Althea does not weld extra arms onto this frame. When the campaign shifts into her fixed-camera work, the doll is not the point of the screen. That is not a nerf. It is a reminder that Penwyll has doors a socket cannot pick. See Althea for that register, then come back here before you spend the next materials as if every problem were a combat body problem.

Steam Early Access is dated 2 September 2026. English only in that window. Full 1.0, consoles, and extra languages are planned for 2027. Balance on sockets and charms will move; the missing arm will not. There is no second doll for another player. One player keeps this body.

If the socket feels empty, that is the design. Do not wait for a hidden fourth limb. Spend the materials you have on the three tracks that exist.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for Penwyll, the doll, and Early Access.

Why is the doll missing a right arm?

So you can craft a tool with a set behaviour and slot it into the socket. Named examples include the Pivoting Greatsword, Chain Rock, Machinegun, Flamethrower, and Enchanted Candelabrum. You cannot retune a finished craft. See the weapon ranking.

What do I level on the doll?

Body, left arm, and right arm as three separate tracks. Body keeps the frame standing. Right arm feeds the socket. Left arm feeds shields, pistols, and utility. The best builds page shows how archetypes spend those tracks.

Where do I repair and upgrade it?

In Penwyll, at the repair shop, using cash and materials found in the field. Town also holds other shops, the Clocktower, and the Mazechapel. Do not sit in a dungeon hoping a fourth upgrade track appears.

Does the doll wear the talismans or does Clover?

The doll. Limb talismans boost damage or cut resource use. Four body talismans protect or retrigger arm effects. Clover holds the catalyst and consumables. Details are on the talisman guide.

Is the doll a separate character for a second player?

No. Withering Realms is single-player. Clover rides the doll. One person plays both halves of the four-arm loop described in the combat guide.
