Withering Realms Getting Started in Penwyll
Clover, the doll, Beynon House, and the habits that keep your first levels useful.
You wake as Clover, a nine-year-old ghost, in a decaying mansion. A faint glow marks you at night. You do not walk Penwyll in a child’s body for long: you pilot a doll about two metres tall, built from wood, metal, and human remains, with the right arm missing. That empty socket is the point of the game. Withering Realms is a single-player horror action RPG from Moonless Formless. Steam Early Access opens on 2 September 2026. You do not need Withering Rooms lore; the story is standalone.
This page is the first-hour checklist. Read it before you spend a stack of levels and before you craft the first weapon you see. The controls guide covers sticks, DualSense, and the slash-key bug report. The combat guide explains why four arms fire independently. Come back here if the doll feels under-levelled in the wrong socket.
Clover, the doll, and levels
The doll is not a costume. Clover sits inside a machine with a missing right arm, and you grow three tracks: body, left arm, and right arm. They level separately. Dumping every point into the right socket in Beynon House makes later left-hand tools and catalyst work feel thin. Dumping everything into body can leave your crafted weapon hitting like a stick. Spend a little, fight a little, then spend again. Early Access lists about fifty weapons and tools plus seventy talismans; you will not see all of them in the opening dungeon, and you should not plan as if you will.
Tools are not customizable after you craft them. You spend resources to make a new one. Talismans slot onto limbs to raise damage or cut resource use. Four body talismans add protection or retrigger arm talismans when conditions are met. Named right-arm examples you will hear about include the Pivoting Greatsword, Chain Rock, Machinegun, Flamethrower, and Enchanted Candelabrum. You do not need a perfect craft in hour one. You need a craft you understand. When you are ready to compare options, open the build planner and the tier list hub.
Beynon House, then town
The opening dungeon is Beynon House. Treat it as a teaching house: puzzles, a birdcage, and enough combat to learn spacing. A scarecrow can look like a prop; do not assume scenery is scenery. After the house you reach Saintswood, the first field. The opening walkthrough covers that route and the first two bosses without spoiling later Penwyll. Use the bosses guide when a fight is stuffing your timing.
Penwyll is a town with shops, NPCs, the Clocktower, Mazechapel, and a repair shop that builds gadgets for the doll’s arm. Do not rush the repair shop in the first twenty minutes. Walk there once you have a reason to craft and a pocket of parts. Replacement eyeballs show up as shop upgrades. The map expands when you defeat perimeter guardians, so a wall that looks closed may simply be waiting on a fight.
Night is a second map. Pitch-black fields, physical lighting, and Clover’s glow (visible at night, washed out by day) are covered in the night cycle guide. Revisit streets after dark for new creatures and secrets. If you only play at noon you will miss half the town.
What this game is not
Withering Realms is not a roguelike. Some areas randomize on entry, but death does not wipe items, crafts, or story. A failed boss is information. The main quest is mostly linear, with multiple endings and a lot of optional content. New Game+ and extra side quests are planned during Early Access toward a 1.0 in 2027. Consoles and extra languages wait for that full release. The Steam Early Access build is English for interface, audio, and subtitles. It includes Steam Cloud, achievements, and full controller support.
During the demo era the game ran well on Steam Deck. Treat that as a historical note, not a promise about every Early Access patch. If a handheld session stutters, open the Perf HUD in graphics options (see controls) and file a report. PC numbers live on the system requirements page.
Habits that save the first night
Use a controller if you can. Spacing and independent arm fire are easier when the right stick is not a keyboard cluster. Check the in-game input map; this wiki does not invent default binds.
Press Slash (/) or use the pause menu to report a bug. Attach a screenshot and mention what the doll was holding. Moonless Formless is a solo Seattle studio (Troy West). Useful reports beat a ranked list of complaints. Official news lives on Steam and the Withering Realms site; community chat has historically used the Moonless Formless Discord.
Althea, a freelance investigator, appears in her own sections that play more like classic survival horror with fixed cameras. You can read her role on the characters hub. She is not your first-hour problem. Clover and the doll are. Patch scope lives on the Early Access notes.
Your first hour should end with three facts: which socket you levelled, which craft you made, and whether you have walked one Saintswood route at night. Everything else can wait until you understand why the doll lurches forward on a secondary melee string. If those three facts are fuzzy, go back to Beynon House and fight the same hallway twice instead of opening a new craft. A clean first hour is slower than a greedy one, and it is the only way the later dungeons stay readable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for Penwyll, the doll, and Early Access.
Should I dump all my levels in Beynon House?
No. Body, left arm, and right arm level separately. Spend a little, fight a little, then spend again. The combat guide explains why each socket matters.
When should I visit the repair shop?
After you have a reason to craft and a pocket of parts, not in the first twenty minutes. The shop builds gadgets for the doll's arm; rushing it wastes resources you will want for a second craft.
Is this a roguelike? Do I lose items on death?
No. Some rooms shuffle on entry, but death does not wipe items, crafts, or story. Withering Realms is single-player with a mostly linear main quest.
Does it run on Steam Deck?
The demo-era build ran well on Steam Deck. Treat that as a historical note. If a session stutters, use the Perf HUD in controls and check system requirements.
How do I report a bug?
Press Slash (/) or use the pause menu. Attach a screenshot and say which arm craft you were using. Scope notes live on the Early Access page.
Where do I go after Beynon House?
Saintswood, then Penwyll. Follow the opening walkthrough and return at night using the night cycle guide.
