Endings Guide

Withering Realms is a single-player horror action RPG with multiple endings. The campaign ends after the initial month shown in the pre-credits sequence. A post-credits scene revealing the longer-term impact of your choices is planned for a future patch during Early Access. This page gives spoiler-free setup guidance first, then expands for players who have finished the campaign and want to understand what they shaped. Steam Early Access is dated 4 September 2026. The game is single-player.

For setup before the ending, start with Getting Started. For combat and talisman builds that affect your preparation, read the build planner and the tier list hub. For the town and night routes that affect your exploration, use the Penwyll map and the night cycle guide.

Endings overview without the plot

The campaign asks choices at key moments. Those choices shape which ending you reach. The game does not mark choices as good or evil, light or dark — it asks you to act and then lives with the result. Choices involve how you treat NPCs, what you promise, what you keep, and what you leave behind in Penwyll.

Multiple endings exist. The initial pre-credits ending shows the first month. A post-credits scene planned for a later patch will show the longer-term impact of your decisions. The roadmap confirms that unlockable Creation Rituals such as Start with All Tools, Start with All Spells, and Mirrored World are also coming during Early Access — those affect your next run, not the ending you just finished.

The choices that matter are not obvious checkpoints. They are the accumulated weight of how you moved through Penwyll, what you asked Althea to do, whether you kept promises, and what you chose at the last door. If you want to understand the shape before you play, read on. If you want to discover it fresh, close this page and come back after the credits.

What affects the ending

The ending you reach depends on how you engaged with four areas of the campaign:

NPC relationships — How you treat the living people of Penwyll shapes whether they are present at the end. Althea is a fixed ally; other NPCs are not. A choice made in conversation can ripple further than a boss fight.

Promises kept and broken — The campaign makes you promises and asks you to make them. A promise kept changes the ending. A promise broken changes it differently. The game does not tell you which door holds which promise until you are already through it.

Items found and not found — Optional loops in graveyards, tombs, and rotting estates contain items that affect the ending. A thorough explorer sees a different closing sequence than a player who followed the main spine only.

The final door — The last choice is not a dialogue. It is a physical act in a specific location. The game does not telegraph it. Players who reach it without thinking about the campaign’s themes may not recognise it as a decision.

The post-credits scene

The roadmap announces that a post-credits scene is planned for a future patch. This scene will show the longer-term impact of your choices beyond the initial month. It is not a different ending — it is an extension of the one you earned. When patch 0.35 or later lands, load your save and watch the credits through to see what your choices built.

Creation Rituals also unlock after playing — The Wizard, The Knight, and Mirrored World are beta rituals that will be properly unlocked in a future version. They do not work in patch 0.34 and will be removed from your inventory when 0.35 releases. They are separate from the endings system.

How to prepare for the ending

There is no perfect loadout for an ending. The game tests preparation, not optimisation. A heavy melee build and a catalyst-support build both reach the same credits. What changes is the path: which optional rooms you could enter, which NPCs you could save, which secrets you could carry to the final door.

Recommended preparation:

  • Finish the main spine before the final area
  • Revisit key locations at night to catch optional content
  • Keep the Althea pages in mind for social choices
  • Do not rush the final door — look around before you act

After the ending

When the credits finish, you return to the Realms screen. Your save is intact. You can continue exploring, collect what you missed, or start a New Game+ when that mode is added during Early Access. The roadmap covers what is planned for the Early Access window.

Steam achievements unlock based on your progress. Major categories include progression through major bosses, defeating perimeter guardians to expand the map, fully investigating locations, and collecting weapons, talismans, and upgrade materials.

Use this page as a bookmark. Come back after the credits to read the expanded section, then start the next run with the Creation Rituals or a different build approach.

FAQ
